Khalil Gibran’s poem “Fear” explores the profound human experience of confronting the unknown. Through the metaphor of a river hesitating before merging with the ocean, Gibran reflects on the nature of fear—how it arises when we face transitions in life, especially those that seem to threaten our very identity. The river’s journey symbolizes life’s progression, with the ocean representing a vast, uncharted future, or perhaps the eternal, infinite self.
Philosophically, Gibran delves into the illusion of separation. The river fears disappearing, yet in reality, it is not losing itself but becoming part of something greater. This speaks to the human tendency to cling to individuality and the familiar, while true liberation lies in surrendering to the larger flow of existence. Gibran subtly suggests that fear dissolves when we embrace the idea that we are not isolated beings, but deeply interconnected with the whole, and in that merging, we find freedom—not annihilation, but unity.
It is said that before entering the sea
A river trembles with fear.
She looks back at the path she has traveled,
from the peaks of the mountains,
the long winding road crossing forests and villages.
And in front of her,
she sees an ocean so vast,
that to enter
there seems nothing more than to disappear forever.
But there is no other way.
The river can not go back.
Nobody can go back.
To go back is impossible in existence .
The river needs to take the risk
of entering the ocean
because only then will fear disappear,
because that’s where the river will know
it’s not about disappearing into the ocean,
but of becoming the ocean.”
